Brushing your dog is an important part of keeping their skin and coat healthy, but also keeping the amount of hair down in the house! The most important time to use a dog brush is spring and autumn when dogs shed to change between a winter and summer coat.
Different people give different advice on brushing your dog, some say start from the back because if you dog can’t see what is happening then he/she will not be as concerned, others say to always start from the head and work backwards, but here are some tips that everyone agrees on:
- To really get out the hair they are shedding then start off by working against the direction of the fur and go over the whole of the coat, then finish off by doing it with the direction of the fur to get out any hair that you dislodged and to smooth it back down for them.
- Take care over sensitive areas and consider using a gentler dog brush to avoid harming them, areas like the face, ears and the underside of their belly could be damaged with a harsh brush.
- You need to brush your dog regularly if you are going to get the most benefit from it, some people suggest doing it daily, but I think that you need to find the schedule that works best for your dog based on how much it sheds, the length of its coat, and how much it likes being brushed.
